A word from
alison lewis (reader)
Here we are in the month of April, hoping that the worst of the Winter weather
is now behind us. I love the season of Spring; all of nature seems to be showing signs of new life following the dark,
cold Winter months. All those who took time to plant bulbs in the Autumn are now rewarded as the Crocuses, Daffodils, and Tulips are blooming with their display of bright colours, the birds are singing and busy making their nests ready for the birth of their young. The trees that once looked bare
and almost dead , are now begfinning to bud
bringing forth new leaves and flowers.
I am fascinated by animals that hibernate through the Winter, such as bats, hedgehogs, dormice, and some tortoises, that now re awaken at this time of year. How great it is for these creatures to eat as much as possible, find a dark sheltered spot, and then go into a deep sleep and wake up when it gets warm again.
In the bible, Jesus very often used the natural world to explain the spiritual world, He used what could be seen to explain
the unseen. We might think that after we plant our seeds
and bulbs in the ground that nothing is happening, but
re-growth takes time. Once planted, seeds and bulbs need food, they take nourishment from the soil, rain, and sun's rays.
Like Springtime in the natural world, God, through His Son Jesus Christ, offers us a new life. As Christians, the main focus of our faith is Christ's resurrection from the tomb on Easter Sunday. Jesus spent three days in darkness before coming back to life, showing us that He has the power over death and that the grave could not hold Him. Jesus' mission was to die for us, He came out of love for all humanity to rescue us from our sins and the darkness of this world and to help us live in His radiant light. When we trust Jesus,
He shows us a much better way to live , and gives us
a new beginning. In times of trouble and darkness,
when we are fed by the truth of God's Word, we can be
lifted up and aligned with God's will for our lives.
When we come to Christ and follow Him, the story of
our salvation goes far beyond anything that we can see
but reaches forward into eternity.
Song of Solomon is a book in the Bible that is not
often referred to in our churches, but I love the invitation
we find in this scripture:
' Look Winter is past, and the rains are over and gone.
The flowers are springing up, the season of singing birds
has come, the cooing of turtledoves fills the air.
The fig trees are forming young fruit,
and the fragrant grapevines are blossoming.
Rise up my darling! Come away with me, my fair one'.
(Song of Solomon 2:11 - 13).
