Your Baptism
CHURCH OF ENGLAND COVID 19 GUIDANCE FOR THOSE ORGANISING AND ATTENDING BAPTISMS
Baptism
Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God that will last the rest of your life.
There are around 10,000 babies and children baptised in the Church of England every month. We also welcome adults who want to be baptised.
Baptism is a celebration of your faith as you make a public declaration of your commitment to follow God.
In the Church of England we hold baptisms (sometimes known as Christenings) for people of all ages, and parents often have their infant children baptised as a sign of their thankfulness to God for the gift of life.
Jesus was baptised in the Bible, all four accounts of Jesus's life talk about how he was baptised in the River Jordan by his cousin, John the Baptist. In baptism a person becomes part of the family of God, adopted into the family of Christ.
Before fonts were used for baptisms the person would be dipped into a river, going under the water completely before being raised out of the river. In this way, baptism mirrored the death and resurrection of Christ.
Confirmation
When a person has been baptised as an infant, they may want to reaffirm their own commitment to God in a confirmation service.
